Why don’t you spell magic with a “k”?
This is an excellent question! Truth be told, I spelled magic with a “k” for years before consciously deciding to change it.
Placing a “k” at the end of “magic” is attributed to esoteric occultist Aleister Crowley who added the “k” as a way of differentiating his practice of ceremonial magic from the sleight-of-hand magic used for entertainment.
There’s no denying Aleister Crowley’s legacy. He essentially molded modern esoteric occultism into what it is today.
His work also heavily influenced Gerald Gardner, the founder of Gardnerian Wicca, which is one of the foundational traditions in neopagan Wicca. As a matter of example, influential Wiccan author, Doreen Valiente, is a Gardnerian High Priestess.
Crowley’s influence on witchcraft and magic is so great it can be found throughout the entire Pagan community. An excellent example of this is the belief that magic with a “k” is the proper spelling.
However, there is evidence that Aleister Crowley wasn’t a very good person. It’s documented that he was controlling, he’s been accused of misogyny and racism, and some very questionable things took place at his Abbey of Thelema.
I will never tell anyone how to spell the word magic, for we each get to make these choices for ourselves. Nor will I judge anyone for choosing to spell it with a “k.”
As for me and my practice, I have chosen not to adopt Crowley’s spelling. I’m fundamentally opposed to such things as misogyny, racism, and pedophilia. I felt that by continuing to use his spelling, I was allowing a trace of that energy to enter my writing and spellwork.
As for differentiating between witchcraft and stage magic, well, this is The Cottage Cauldron. Witchery is discussed here along with spells and potions and phases of the moon. I think it’s safe to say readers can assume what I mean when I talk about magic. ✨
If I sign up for a free resource, are you going to bombard me with emails?
I send a monthly newsletter and occasionally send one-off messages if there’s something time-sensitive I think you’d like to know.
If you subscribe and find that my messages aren’t adding to your life, you can unsubscribe at any time. 😊
I’m on your email list but I lost the password to access the free resources. Can you help me?
Certainly!
Just send an email to admin [at] cottagecauldron [dot] com (cryptic so spambots don’t attack).
Be sure to put “Lost Password” in the subject line.
Also, be sure you either send it from the account you signed up with or provide me with the email address you used to sign up.
Once I’ve confirmed your email address, I’ll get the password to you straight away! 💌
I’m looking for community support. Do you have a Facebook Group?
Currently, I do not have a group on Facebook. Truth be told, I likely never will.
If anything, I’ll create a Patreon community with a free tier so anyone can join and participate. This will allow me to better protect The Cottage Cauldron community and build a community outside of the Meta/Zuckerberg universe.
I do have a Facebook page and Instagram, so I’m not entirely Meta-free. But when it comes to community, I simply cannot trust Meta or Zuck to keep communities safe from hate, bigotry, gatekeeping, etc. 🧿
I want to get access to your resource library but I don’t want to subscribe to another email list. Can I have access to the resources without giving you my personal information?
(Coming Soon) Yes! You can purchase nearly every resource we create, without subscribing to the monthly newsletter, by visiting The Cottage Cauldron Shop.
That said, some resources are reserved only for subscribers.
If you don’t want to miss out, please consider subscribing. I promise I won’t abuse the privilege of having your email address.
